Quite frankly, I think both of you as painting with far too broad a brush.  It isn't as simple as so-called coastal, latte-sipping, elites ... nor is it as simple as so-called uneducated, racist middle-America.  The biggest divide, imo, is between rural and urban.  You have urban communities right in the middle of middle America who vote more along the lines of those in large coastal cities, and you have rural areas in coastal states who vote more along the lines of those in middle America.

Point taken Kittycat..and you're right, most urban areas in the Midwest and South are predominantly Democratic.

I would suggest though, that Democratic voters in these parts of the country for the most part have different priorities than their coastal counterparts.

Two of the current lawmakers I respect the most on Capitol Hill are Senators Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.  They are both Democrats.  They were both elected in Red states on a platform based on workers' rights (wages, working conditions, Unions).  They have both also done a great deal of work with the opioid crisis which is running rampant in that part of the country, and claiming lives.  They very routinely reach across the aisle and work with Republicans on bipartisan legislation that is agreeable to the vast majority of Americans.  (Donnelly was recently named the most bipartisan Senator of the last 25 years by the Lugar Center, a group that maps bipartisanship among all members of Congress.  Manchin was rated in the top-5 of the Senate in this regard).  Pragmatic..solving problems without becoming latched on the divisive issues..that is what I value in an elected official.

It is also worth noting that they are both pro-life.  Manchin is a strong supporter of gun rights and is highly rated by the NRA (not sure on Donnelly).  I highly doubt, regardless of all the good they might do for their constituents, that any Democratic candidate holding these views would be given a second look for funding or support from their party in a coastal state.  They would be anathema.
