AP Top 25/ USA Today Coachs Poll
« on: January 02, 2014, 01:38:33 PM »
Now that the non-conference games are pretty much over, these rankings should get more accurate every week. The Shockers are probably the most surprising of the teams that are still undefeated. Their biggest wins were against BYU on a nuetral court, @Saint Louis, home against Tennessee, and @Alabama. Only a couple teams in the MVC have a legit chance to beat them IMO, and they are Indiana State and Missouri State.

It will be interesting to see where they are ranked at the end of the season if they finish the regular season unscathed.

The biggest drops this week were Duke from #7 to #16.
This is the 1st time the Blue Devils are out of the top 10 since 2007.

Kansas drops 4 spots to #20 after picking up their 4th loss in an upset at home to SDSU.

Oregon dropped 7 spots to #17 after their first loss last week.

Carolina drops out of the top 25 after falling to Wake Forest.

Uconn drops out of the polls after collecting back to back losses at Houston and
at SMU.

The newcomers to this weeks top 25 are Illinois and Kansas State.

The Illini have reeled off 4 straight wins at home, but lets see how
they respond Wednesday night at Wisky.

The Wildcats of KSU have won 9 in a row, including a huge win at home against Okie State. We will see how they fare at TCU tonight and at the Phog on Saturday.

Cuse and ISU remain unbeaten. tOSU takes it's first loss in a thrilla' at MSU.
Will #3 OSU move down after a close loss AT #5 MSU?
I'm sure they will swap places, but I don't think OSU should drop at all.
So tough to win on the road in rowdy venues.

That's an interesting looking AP Top 10...
SDSU, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Wichita State all in there?
I like it!

I don't know how Memphis is ranked below U of Lol in the Coach's Poll, though.
Yes, I see they've played two more games, but Memphis beat Louisville in Louisville.
Unless the two extra wins were against good teams, that seems suspect, to me.

Newcomers to the AP Top 25 this week are:
Saint Louis
Oklahoma
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
Creighton

Creighton was 23rd in the Coaches poll last week, which just goes to show that the Coaches know more than the media...lol

Interestingly, both polls have the identical top 7.

Duke drops another 7 spots to #23
Iowa State has now lost 2 games after falling to the Jayhawks last night.
UK continues to climb the ladder to get back in the top 10.
SDSU has now cracked the top 10, partly because of many losses throughout the top 25.
Still 4 unbeaten teams left, with Wichita State having the only realistic shot at "running the table".

ISU will drop next week after last nights loss.

I'd have to look at their schedules, but yeah, I agree Memphis beating them should be a pretty good indicator of who is the better team.
Maybe the Coach's have more respect for Pitino than Pastner? LOL

Welp Cali, Memphis is currently 24th in RPI, and Louie is 41st.
Memphis split with Okie, and went 1-1 against the other 2 top 25 teams they played.
Louie has had an easier schedule, they have only played 2 teams in the top 25, Memphis twice, and well you know what happened in the other one...lol.

So yeah, not sure what the Coach's are looking at there.
Maybe they still think the Tigers are in CUSA. grin1

Iowa jumped 6 spots...nice. Could very easily be undefeated... they had ISU, Wisky, and Nova beaten, but couldn't close them out. They are a Sweet 16 team come March...hopefully.

Speaking of RPI, how is that figured and why does it jump around with wins and losses?

It's an index that just is basically rating each teams strength of schedule.
It's all about wins and losses and where the games are played makes a big difference.

Here is a link that can answer a lot of questions about it that you may have....

I don't know, J. They got some pretty good "signature wins".
They beat Creighton and Marquette on a nuetral court, and beat KU at the Phog.
Hell, their only loss was a close game against Arizona.
They've beaten the teams they should have, and destroyed the teams they should have destroyed. Looks like they come to play, whomever it is they play that day.

Doing good Coach!

It has been a while.....when Alford was at Iowa and Larry "Party Down" Eustachy was at ISU...it is nice to see us getting some love in hoops...long time coming.

So who is the best team in the country? I'm not sold on Zona...yet...although that Gordon kid can play. I'd probably have to say Michigan St...they are versatile and well coached. Injuries are a concern though. One thing is for sure, probably 10 teams who legitimately have a chance to win it all.
