Yeah, it raises out of a pond right next to the entrance after you complete a few quests.

Because the F***ing thing won't die and won't attack back.  Really easy way to level up all of your attacks.

Once that chick gives you Shadowmere, it's yours for the rest of the game ... unless you run it over a cliff or something.  I think that's the only way the thing will die.

No, I haven't.  I played as a vampire in Oblivion and didn't like it so I never even tried it in Skyrim.
