I just bought an ATV so I can actually find some animals!!

I find more when I walk in the woods instead of going on a four wheeler.  I can squirrel hunt all the way to the woods from the back door.

Walking is also excellent exercise especially in deep snow!

The problem is I blew something up on the machine before I even got it out of the truck. Alot of the use will be for scouting and playing terrain research and water locating.

It is very useful to figure out your surroundings with an ATV versus walking.

Cover more land and find stuff quicker, but than hop off and glass for a long time so the animals come back in the area.

What the plan is: Get into the back country and hunt. Make camp about 10 miles away from the nearest road and hike in from there.

I'm a freaking idiot!!

My elk unit is southern, my second choice, fat chance of drawing out is Limited entry northeastern everything.
Deer is Central and northern.
Bear is the same as my second choice Elk.

Not very smart planning by myself if you ask me.

Question for the more veteran hunters.

I'm applying for a bear tag that is very restricted to any hunting. Limited entry deer, elk and bear. So with that said, I'll never draw an elk or deer tag in this area for bear. Whats the best way to scout the area for my tag??

If it's public land, you could just go out there and look for signs.  You might want to get a topo map of the area if you can't get out there.  That'll show you any potential bottlenecks and ridges.

I think that just walking is the best way. Or ATV but getting off to walk at some areas to get even a better idea of the land and looking for sign.

I have a topo map, but I'm concerned about actually seeing the mountains. They are about 5 hours away and the only time I'll get there is for the bear hunt. And its roadless so that'll be fun too!!

So just handle it like deer and elk??

Considering that I've never hunted bear before, I guess you'd just have to look for signs (tracks, scat, etc.).
